What Writing Is and Isn’t

February 21, 2013 — 6 Comments

Writing isn’t easy. I wish it was. I wish I could tell you that all you had to do is to pick up a copy of a Hemingway book, give it a hug and kiss and call it squishy, and wait three days before you magically fall in love with it and all your books will do well. That would be awesome.

Lots of people think they have an idea about what writing is. The purpose of this post is to clear the air. Let’s take a look at what writing isn’t…

Here’s what writing isn’t:

Writing isn’t sitting outside a Paris café’ smoking a cigarette and drinking a latte.

It isn’t selling hundreds of millions of copies and retiring to the Caribbean.

It isn’t being sophisticated and stuck up and snobbish.

Well what is writing then?

I’m glad you asked. Us writers are getting tired of those stereotypes!

Writing is about communicating your ideas in a way that makes people stop and think.

It’s about working your rear end off just to get a piece published online…commission free.

It’s about building better relationships and structures for our lives in order to make the world a better place.

Writing is hard work, but I love every single excruciating minute of it. If this sounds like something you want to be a part of, then let’s talk about it…use the comment section below.

Enjoyed the post. I entered the realm of writing three years ago. It has been hard work. I have quit several times because I thought my writing did not measure up. It took a lot for me to launch my website and finish my book. I still struggle with some aspects, but who said it would be easy.

Thanks Bernard. I would love to read your book…what’s it about?

It is a book with 42 inspirational messages to encourage, equip and empower individuals to realize and live their unique vision. The title is ‘Vision Impact!’.Here is my website http://www.leadtoimpact.com and on the front page you can click the book image and read 10 of the messages. If you like it, I would love to send you the entire book for you to read and give me a testimony so that I can include it on the website and book. Thanks.

Tessa, earlier this week I was drained, sleep-deprived, and had nothing left to give. I got cranky and started to hate writing. I wanted to scream from the mountaintops “Don’t become a writer!!! Do anything else–do something productive. Go dig a ditch!!”

Thankfully I didn’t shout that everywhere because that’s just a little bit cynical, right? But writing is GREAT. And it often is the most challenging, draining, frustrating thing ever. The great days DEFINITELY outweigh the bad ones. Writing is amazing. But it honestly can kind of take over your life entirely if you aren’t careful. I’ve done that before. Try to find some sort of balance if you are a beginning writer. Otherwise you will have extreme highs and extreme lows.

Thanks for the tip Jim. You always have helpful bits of wisdom that speak to me.

Also, I don’t know why, but I was never notified about your comment. Just now saw it.
